From inside her prison cell in Lille, France, Dorothy Borutti vowed she would embrace the first liberator who came to free her – and her hometown of Le Touquet – from the clutches of the German occupiers during World War II. At twenty years old, she’d been thrown in jail for listening to the English radio. How unfair. And how terrifying.
Meanwhile in Britain, Captain Sandy MacPherson from Regina, Saskatchewan, was creating a more just court martials system for the Canadian army, though itching to directly support Canadian troops in combat.
And that’s how he found himself in Le Touquet, France, in the arms of Dorothy Borutti.
They married just before victory in Europe, and after the war, Dorothy followed Sandy back to Canada where he became an esteemed judge in Saskatchewan and they raised a family together in Regina. Dorothy embraced her new country of Canada while serving as a lifelong ambassador for France.
Their daughter, Romie Christie, is a former Canadian journalist who shares glimpses of her parents’ captivating lives through their personal journals, family stories, and historical records. Theirs is a story of war, love, and peace. A story for the ages.
